"Each new machine invented by humans became a transformative mirror. But the machine of our bodies is as mesmerising as the devices which record it, translate it or hallucinate its magnificence. "

As always, very illuminating stuff, Joana. You've introduced me to a number of figures that I was previously unaware of--Margaret Watts Hughes being of particular interest. I may have learned about some of them, such as Marey and possibly Hughes, in my Performance Art classes many years ago, but I am surprised (not surprised?) that there isn't a Wiki entry on Hughes.

We are so constantly distracted by the external that we forget an entire universe (containing billions of life forms) exists within our own bodies. Thank you for the reminder, Joana!

Thanks Daniel! In fairness I think her drawings were discovered recently but don’t quote me on it. She was a woman so she was discarded and she was not an inventor such as Chladni in Germany who also experimented with the technology of sound. Which, to be honest, makes her even more interesting! She just invented something when there wasn’t a device that did what she needed. Quite remarkable.

Fascinating, thank you! And what is that big of 'unsupported content' at the end of your article???
